Mechanical Interactives Engineer

Full-Time

We are seeking to hire a Full-time Seasonal Mechanical Interactives Engineer to push the state-of-the-possible in interactive experiences, moving sculptural elements, and mechanisms. The ideal candidate will have an eye for reliability and manufacturability. This position reports directly to the Director of Engineering.

Job Type: Hourly/Salary, Full-time/Seasonal

Pay: $5,830 - $7,500 / month, based on experience

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and build interactive mechanisms for museum exhibits. 
  • Determine and incorporate design considerations for safety, long-term performance, & maintenance.
  • Ensure designs are robust enough for high operational cycles with uncontrolled operators (the public).
  • Create designs based on top-level descriptions using off-the-shelf components and custom parts.
  • Hands-on building and assembly of designs.
  • Work with the rest of our fabrication and design teams to integrate mechanisms with other architectural elements, plan installations, and utilize our unique in-house fabrication technologies. 
  • Participate in a team culture in which all team members are willing to assist one another.

Job Requirements

  • Proven experience with SolidWorks. 
  • Ability to design mechanisms and integrate custom and acquired parts into large assemblies.
  • Experience designing for manufacturing, such as: machining, weldments, sheet metal forming, and/or mold making.
  • Mechatronics experience integrating sensors, circuitry, controlling actuators, specifying and sourcing actuators.
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA), basic stress analysis, and free body diagrams.
  • The ability to maintain an even temperament under tight deadlines and stressful conditions.
  • The ability to work well with others to create and maintain a positive work environment.
  • Encourage and participate in a “just ask if you don’t know” approach to problem prevention.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prototyping and fabrication experience including 3D printing, laser cutting, welding, turning, milling, and/or CNC machining.

Project Manager

Full-Time

We are seeking to hire a full-time Project Manager to oversee the construction process of museum halls and exhibits. The ideal candidate will have leadership and project management experience in museum, theater, film production, or design-build construction. They will be able to diligently track numerous tasks and teams across a variety of projects, be a highly effective communicator, and be detail-oriented and results-driven. This position reports directly to the Director of Operations.

Job Type: Salary Exempt, Full-Time

Pay: $100,000 - $130,000 / year based on experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for large-scale projects that include between 10 and 60 sub-projects of varying complexity as they move from concept through production and installation. 
  • Report and maintain project related documents in one central server.
  • Understand initial project contracts to manage project scope and initiate communication of scope changes to the client.
  • Oversee multiple projects with the ability to prioritize competing needs in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Develop and implement project plans and schedules that comply with budgets and scheduling for assigned projects.
  • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • Define project tasks and resource requirements.
  • Manage project resource allocation and project budget.
  • Maximize efficiency of assigned project team through strong leadership, organizational and motivational skills.
  • Provide support to the project team.
  • Track project deliverables ensuring deadlines are met.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in project management in Museum exhibition, theater or film production or large-scale construction environments or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience managing projects with budgets exceeding $1M.
  • Strong understanding of Waterfall, Agile, Scrum, and/or hybrid PM methodologies.
  • Proficient with project management tools such as Gantt Charts, scheduling software, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Experience managing multiple relationships simultaneously including but not limited to general labor subcontractors, specialized subcontractors including electricians, carpenters, lighting specialists, AVIT, etc.
  • Strong organizational, logistics, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to read and navigate architectural plans as well as 3D models in Rhino.
  • The ability to maintain an even temperament under tight deadlines and stressful conditions.

  • Shop Fabrication, Themed Attraction, and Museum exhibit experience a plus.
  • Permanent Installation Construction methods experience.
  • English and Spanish language proficiency.
  • 3+ years of experience using 3D modeling software, with Rhino 3D preferred.
  • PMP or CAPM certification
  • Exceptionally strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • The willingness to learn new software and master equipment outside of scope of experience.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional time management skills and the ability to multitask across overlapping projects at varying phases of development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field.

Shop Manager

Full-Time

We are seeking to hire a Full-time Shop Manager to manage a variety of operational aspects of our facility. The ideal candidate will have previous experience managing a fabrication shop, have the ability to juggle a large variety of tasks across multiple timelines, and have basic construction skills. This position reports to the Purchasing & Logistics Manager and directly supervises the Facilities Team.

Job Type: Salary Exempt, Full-Time

Pay: $48,000 - $64,000/ year, based on experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Building Maintenance
  • Supervise all aspects related to the functionality of the building and coordinate the necessary repairs, including electricity, water, HVAC, and roof leaks.
  • Communicate with the Property Manager and contractors to ensure necessary maintenance is performed.
Tool Inventory/Maintenance
  • Manage tool inventory and maintain an orderly and well-stocked tool crib.
  • Coordinate maintenance of all tools, including large shop equipment (CNC, table saw, robot arm, forklifts).
Consumable Inventory Tracking
  • Ensure that frequently-used materials are properly stocked (fasteners, adhesives, abrasives, sheet goods, etc.).
  • Submit timely purchase requests in order to avoid inventory shortages.
Company Vehicle Maintenance
  • Ensure company vehicles are kept in working order.
  • Coordinate annual inspections and registrations.
Health & Safety Protocols
  • Maintain a safe work environment free of hazards and keep first aid stations well stocked & current.
  • Inform and enforce safety policies and procedures.
  • Hold monthly safety meetings as outlined in the safety manual and perform random safety checks.
Incoming/Outgoing Product Logistics
  • Ensure incoming deliveries are accurately labeled, stored, and distributed.
  • Plan daily routes for pick-ups and deliveries with driver(s).
  • Ensure that outgoing items are artfully wrapped, packed, loaded, and secured for transport.
Facilities Team Management
  • Use Trello task management software to organize and delegate task lists for the facilities team.

General Shop Upkeep
  • Maintain a tidy and organized shop with effective storage to maximize available space.

  • 2+ years of warehouse and/or shop management experience.
  • When necessary, a willingness to work longer days, nights, or weekends to meet project deadlines.

  • Demonstrate multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Safely operate a forklift, company vehicles, and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and vendors, show initiative, and fit into an interdepartmental environment.
