We are a diverse group of artists, fabricators, designers and engineers who sweat the details and take pride in careful development and skilled execution.

About

Genesis

It all started back in 2012 when Troy was looking for people to help build an honorarium sculpture for Burning Man. Eric heard about it and roped Logan in and we (and a crew of 14 others) made our way to the desert to build the crazy thing. Miraculously, we all came back alive and with a deepened respect for one another.

Over the next few years we continued to collaborate. Logan started renting part of Troy’s small shop (where Troy also lived, CNC machine separated from his bedroom by only a thin wall) and after a year or so they decided to go in on a larger space together. And that was how “Root Lab LLC” was born— the result of many beers, a lot of sweat and just the right amount of necessity— the root of it all.

Not long after, Logan and Troy were able to convince Eric that we should "form like Voltron" and become stronger than the sum of our parts. We realized that as a team we could accomplish great things so we joined our efforts and began rootlab as we know it today.

PEOPLE OFTEN ASK “WHAT IS ROOTLAB?”

It’s a harder question than it seems. We don’t have a specific discipline or material we focus on— we love the challenge of solving interesting problems for interesting people using the best means, materials and methods available.

Perhaps rootlab is best described by describing our trajectory—  we each started separately doing small projects– furniture, welding and artwork for ourselves and for our friends. We began working together on larger and larger projects. Gradually and then all at once we were designing and building furniture, signage and artwork for residential, commercial and public spaces all over Houston.

We are not easily defined because maybe the only thing that has been constant from the beginning is change– we’re continually evolving to meet the needs of our clients, collaborators and team.

Team rootlab

Logan was an okay artist who became a not-half-bad fabricator who is now an adequate designer and (jury’s out on the adjective) entrepreneur. He loves dogs and gardening. He hates the permitting office, being asked questions before he’s had his first coffee and losing at chess. He can’t remember much from before rootlab, but according to records he has a B.A. in Visual Arts from Rice University.

Eric is a craftsman with a strong background in both physical and digital creation. He loves the cold strength and beauty of steel. He hates wood but the feeling is mutual. Eric is notorious for solving unforeseen problems by producing just the right tool or scrap of material from the cab of his truck. Before rootlab, Eric was a Project Manager for Mainland Construction Inc. He has a B.A. in Visual Arts from Rice University.
